Our Story

New Bern ArtWorks began when Martha Williams, having retired as an art instructor, decided to spend the next phase of her life creating art. However she did not want to work alone and found the creative process was greatly enhanced when working and consulting with other artists.  

While exploring the idea of making art with artist friends, and having everyone’s common good in mind, Martha discovered that talented artists were drawn to her idea.  

Her next step was to bring unity and variety to this concept.  There needed to be a theme that would inspire creativity while maintaining unity in everyone's work. They began to think outside the box. That was it... deep boxed panel as a "canvas". The box is simple three dimensional form but with endless possibilities. “Let’s see how many wonderful things we can create using a box.”  And the journey began.

This year area artists Jim Bisbee, Donna Slade and Vicki Vitale joined Martha and the gallery expanded as well as its vision to become New Bern Artworks & Company.

Artworks is located at 323B(rear) Middle Street in the wonderful historic town of New Bern, North Carolina.  The gallery can be easily accessed through Port City Java and Bank of the Arts. Get a cup of Port City Java coffee, come and enjoy the gallery.
